Biography:

Mr Amer Khan was educated at Kings College London where he gained a 1st class honours in Physiology and Exercise Medicine before qualifying in medicine in 1994. He undertook higher surgical training in orthopaedics in South West England before completing subspecialist fellowship training in Complex Shoulder surgery at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital & in Complex Knee surgery at Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital.

He was awarded the prestigious British Orthopaedic Association European Travelling Fellowship gaining further subspecialist training working with pioneers in arthroscopic and Sports Knee, Shoulder and Hip surgery in Ghent, Lyon, Annecy, Nice and Toulouse before embarking on further fellowships in the USA and other European Centres of Excellence.

He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports knee and shoulder injuries in 2010 at the Homerton University Hospital, where he was Clinical Lead for the Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics and Joint Clinical Lead for Sports & Exercise Medicine.

Mr Khan was a selected member of the Knee team and provided acute care to injured athletes during the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. He treated a large number of athletes with knee injuries and performed their surgery at the Homerton University Hospital (designated hospital for the London 2012 Games). He coordinated the provision of a highly specialised multidisciplinary approach to their care securing their return to elite professional sport. Mr Khan continues to treat professional and semi-professional athletes from all disciplines as well as sports & fitness enthusiasts.

As a highly trained surgeon and sports arthroscopist (keyhole surgeon) working within a multidisciplinary team he is particularly apt in avoiding surgery where appropriate. His expertise includes ACL reconstruction and pioneering techniques in ACL repair, meniscal and cartilage preservation including repair, partial replacement and transplant surgery, all ligament surgery including revision and all arthroscopic procedures to the shoulder and hip as well as Knee & Shoulder Joint Replacement Surgery.

Mr Khan’s subspecialist interest is in treating sports injuries and has particular expertise in biological preservation surgery including biological alternatives to joint replacement. He was the first surgeon in North East London & Essex to have successfully performed an arthroscopic meniscal transplant of the knee.

He is committed to education and is currently involved in a number of research projects. He regularly teaches Orthopaedic and Sports & Exercise Medicine trainees and consultants on shoulder, knee and sports injury courses, both nationally and internationally, jointly leads several sports injury services and is a member of the Specialist Training Committee for Trauma and Orthopaedics.
